A 16-foot-long prototype segment representative of in-orbit fabricated and assembled tri-beam structures was designed for and fabricated from a graphite/thermoplastic materials system. The long cap beams and the cross members were formed at 600 F. Assembly consisted of flat and pierced joint welds using ultrasonic energy. Sub-elements of the cap beam were tested in compression, as was the prototype beam segment. The full-scale prototype test complemented the crippling tests of the sub-element cap beam specimens.
