As spacecraft operational mission lifetime requirements increase and sensor and other instrumentation requirements become more stringent, means of extending the operational lifetimes of satellite systems and subsystems become increasingly important. Spacecraft contamination is one of the principal limiting factors to long life spacecraft system and subsystem operations. A unified, coordinated Air Force-wide spacecraft contamination control program is being developed. This program encompasses all aspects of spacecraft contamination: identification and control of prelaunch contaminant sources, on-orbit outgassing and thruster impingement on contamination sensitive playload surfaces, identification of and development of spacecraft qualified materials, procedures for selection and qualification of spacecraft materials, and spacecraft contamination assessment and material trade-off studies.
