The applications of a technique to monitor the reliability growth of commercial vehicles during the development and pre-production phase is demonstrated. The paper shows that with careful and consistent monitoring of failures, even from the limited number of samples which are available in the early phases of production, it is possible to make accurate calculations of reliability levels. Reliability growth rate monitoring can be used by design management to monitor development progress in new design programmes and to generate and maintain consistent production standards. (Peters)
