In this paper it is shown that the acoustic source level of cavitating ship propellers can be divided into two distinct regions when considering the mechanisms responsible for the observed noise levels. Below about 50-100 Hz, it is demonstrated that the cavities on the propeller, as an equivalent, single colume variation, cause the high levels at harmonics of the blade rate frequency. Above about 50-100 Hz, it is shown that the acoustic source level is dominated by the collapse characteristics of the individual cavities. In this case, particularly high levels occur when the cavities collapse in the form of many small bubbles, such as happens in the case of cloud and bubble cavitation. With this knowledge, it is possible to define measuresin designing a propeller for which the noise levels must be minimized. These are described. (Kursetz)
