Commercial automotive engine oils were investigated in an attempt to determine their overall performance effectiveness. Physiochemical data were developed on the 17 samples to assist in this study. Standard inspection tests were employed as well as additional laboratory performance-type tests. The data developed indicated many of the oils do not comply with the physical/chemical requirements of MIL-L-46152. This failure could cause potential performance problems in automotive engines.
