Two oceangoing salvage tugboats, which are the world's biggest, were built and delivered at our Aichi Works. As superior abilities such as high speed, high power and large thrust were requested, these boats have some unique structural characteristics. These characteristics are wide, thin and long aft hull form which is about 30 % of the ship's length, two large fixed nozzles and wide, rectangular, double bottom engine room which is about 25 % of the ship's length and located amidships. They were expected to cause some vibration problems, therefore, from the planning stage, careful considerations were given in preventing such troubles, by designing with careful attention for the continuity of the rigidity of the aft hull structure, avoiding resonance between the natural frequencies of nozzles and propeller excitation, and providing two partial transverse bulkheads in the engine room. Thus, the results were satisfactory not only at sea trials but also at normal operating conditions. (Wassmann)
