When bulk materials are transported by rail in the northern parts of the continent during winter, freezing of the material can occur. This makes the material difficult to discharge from the cars. Various computer models of the freezing process have been developed. These models are, however, based on various assumptions whose validity is difficult to judge. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to provide experimental results with which numerically predicted results could be compared. A copper concentrate and a coal were frozen by placing them in a container whose surface was kept at about -30C (-20 F). During a test, the surface temperature and the temperature at various points in the material were measured. The measured and predicted temperatur variations in the material were compared.(Kursetz)
