The weight of a bumper system with a plastic fascia is significantly affected by the weight of the bumper reinforcement beam. This paper addresses the design and manufacture of ultra high strength steel bumper reinforcements, any provides and example of a proven design. It is shown that light gauge, ultra high strength steel bumper reinforcement beams can, in some cases, be an economically effective way to save weight. (Buehn)
