A particulate sampling system has been designed and fabricated for the collection of exhaust particles emitted by aircraft turbine engines. The samples obtained by the sampling system were suitable for the determination of total mass emission rate and characterization of the exhaust particles. Two separate samples were necessary - a bulk sample for mass emission rate and a light deposit of particles for individual characterization. Operational adjustments and performance evaluations were made utilizing a TF-30 MIXED-FLOW TURBOJET ENGINE. The reliability of the data was estabished through repeated tests and the collaboration among the different techniques used to characterize the particles. (Buehn)
