The state-of-the-art of aircraft gas turbine engine monitoring instrumentation was examined. It was found that engine monitoring development, which began approximately in 1959, has not produced an overall concept capable of accurately determining engine condition. Spectrometric oil analysis, sonic analyzers, hot section analyzers, and in-flight engine performance data recording have demonstrated the ability to monitor certain aspects of engine condition. Work is presently being conducted in development of radioactive tagging techniques, refinement of vibrational and sonic analysis, and in refinement of hot section analyzers. There has been a general reluctance on the part of the engine manufacturers to develop engine monitoring systems. The need for a broad-based approach to the development of an effective engine monitoring system was noted. (Buehn)
