A procedure for calculation of coupled horizontal and torsional vibration of ships with large deck openings in developed based on the beam theory and application of the finite element method. Shear deformation and warping of cross-section are taken into account. A new beam finite element of 8 d.o.f. is constructed for modelling of the middle open part of ship hull, while the ordinary finite element of 6 d.o.f. may be used for the close ship ends. A computer program is developed for calculation of free and forced coupled and uncoupled vibration, which made correlation analysis for a container ship able. Developed theory and computer program are verified comparing calculation results for a pontoon to corresponding results obtained by 3-dim. analysis using SESAM programing system. Some facts of coupling phenomenon are pointed out in conclusion.(Wassmann)
