A new technique for the deduction of bearing forces in a complete marine installation is described. Shaker trials with a machine running are used to determine responses at bearing caps due to application of a known force at several positions on the machine and its supporting structure. The results are interpreted reciprocally to allow the bearing forces to be deduced from measurements of vibration due to the rotating shaft, using multiple regression to minimise the effects of experimental errors.(Wassmann)
