The antisymmetric response of an elastic ship to sinusoidal waves is examined using linear modal techniques. The calculations are performed for a container ship travelling at a selected heading with respect to the waves. Using a linear structural theory for antisymmetric motions and distortions, a set of linear equations governing these responses is presented. By employing a form of strip theory, the fluid actions are determined as generalised forces at the principal co-ordinates of the dry hull. The resonant frequencies of the 'dry' and 'wet' hull are discussed. The effects of including and neglecting warping stiffness in the analysis are examined with reference to the lateral bending moment, twisting moment and shear force at positions along the hull. The convergence of the modal contributions to the responses is also discussed.(Wassmann)
