A digital electronic ignition system is presented, in which the advance characteristics are digitized and stored in a PROM, therefore being easily alterable in operation. This system generates advance characteristics as a function of engine speed and manifold vacuum; two additional ON-OFF inputs are provided for advance corrections related to particular engine conditions. A circuit to control the HV coil charging time is included, in order to maintain constant energy to the spark-plugs. A brief description is given of the special equipments developed to determine on the engine under test the advance characteristics giving best performance, fuel economy and exhaust emissions. Experimental results and evaluation of factors influencing the system accuracy are also presented. (Wassmann)
