The development from the first turbocharged engine in 1953 is described. Port area diagrams in conjunction with blow-down and scavenge diagrams show that constant pressure turbocharged engines require considerably smaller blow-down integrals than pulse turbocharged engines. The low resistance to flow through the cylinders in conjunction with the above observation made the change over to constant pressure turbocharging preferable at a scavenge pressure of approximately 2 bar (abs). An emperical basis for design of new engines is given and the design of a new exhaust belt is then described. (Buehn)
