A new three-dimensional time-dependent inviscid blunt body code is described and validated by comparison of the predictions to experimental data and existing numerical procedures. The technique is formulated in terms of a new coordinate transformation procedure that is capable of closely aligning coordinate surfaces with ablated nosetip geometries. As a preliminary step in the development of a three-dimensional blunt body code capable of treating embedded shocks, two shock-capturing schemes formulated in the new coordinate system are compared and their relative merits are examined for the axisymmetric problem.
