The conventional off-highway rear dump truck has long been the primary vehicle for material haulage around the world. However, in some operations, the tractor/trailer has proven to be an effective hauler that outperforms a rear dump truck. The truck and tractor/trailer each have their own distinct application characteristics. Cost of material moved and productivity are decisive factors in haul vehicle selection. However, these calculated values must be modified by practical considerations involved in an earthmoving operation. Material to be handled, vehicle characteristics, haul road grade and length, and tire limitations are some factors that must be evaluated in hauler comparison. A break-even cost analysis method is described that shows the tractor/trailer can haul material for less cost than a truck on up to 5 % uphill grades. The coefficient of haul road friction required to operate on grade is greater for the tractor/trailer than for the truck. The truck has a grade climbing advantage over the tractor/trailer, both loaded and empty. (Wassmann)
