The installation effects on propeller noise and propeller wake flow in flight have been examined experimentally by operating a model-scale propeller in the Lockheed anechoic open-jet wind tunnel. In particular, two aspects of propeller operation in a real situation have been quantified. These are: The effects of non-zero angle-of-attack or propeller inflow angle relative to the flight path and the propeller inflow distortion due to the upwash generated by the presence of wing and flap behind the propeller. The results show that not only are these installation effects very important, but they are inadequately predicted using existing methods. (Wassmann)
