The painting of offshore structures has now become a vital aspect in the life of a painting contractor. Preparation of steelwork and protection with anti-corrosive materials is a complex and sophisticated business. Programming work to meet contract requirements is critical and it is essential that consideration is given to this at the outset of the construction. Too often the painting contractor is the last in line for consideration when the original planning is done. The effect then is that painting work has to be carried out offshore with all the resultant problems associated with North Sea conditions which increase costs and extend programmes, which are often curtailed by the 'weather window'. The main contractor must, at all times, be aware that the structures need painting and he must bring in his sub-contract painter at the early stages of planning and allow enough time to complete this small but essential part of the operation on time, and in the correct environment.
