Over the last decade experience has been gained in the protection of offshore structures in the North Sea. Based on technology developed for the Offshore Industry of the USA and Middle East the protective coatings now used will meet the most rigorous conditions of the North East coastal waters of Britain for all but certain areas of platforms and rigs. The preferred systems are based on zinc containing primers overcoated with high build epoxy, chlorinated rubber or vinyl coatings. It is emphasized that the coating system must be applied to a correctly cleaned substrate to the optimum film thickness for long term protection. The painting process therefore must be a consideration to be taken in proper context in the design and erection of the offshore structures. The offshore maintenance of structures is an expensive and in many instances a tedious operation, and therefore, from a cost effectiveness point of view, the protective system which is applied during the building stage must be given the greatest attention to avoid unnecessary breakdowns. Further development of coatings which are easier to repair, longer lasting and suitable for very long protection of the tidal/splash zone, is continuing, and products now being examined will be used to a greater extent in the future.
