A simple theory is outlined for predicting the performance of efficient sailing craft, and the important parameters governing the range of foilborne speeds are discussed. Two designs of sailing hydrofoil craft are described and their performance is compared: MAYFLY currently holds the World Sailing Speed Record for her class, and uses a surface piercing foil system, FORCE 8 is a novel craft using a fully submerged foil system.
