The paper reviews the Surface Effect Ship Principle and discusses the emerging terminology relevant to the particular mode of operation of high speed surface craft. The propulsion, handling and seakeeping characteristics of SES craft are outlined. For Military applications, the author describes a variety of vessels fitted with a strike capability, from a general purpose light machine gun to surface to surface missiles. The requirements of the Customs and Police Authorities are followed by a longer dissertation on the composition and role of the Coastguards, with particular reference to the problems of policing the EEZ. Here, the merits of the high speed SES, notably the ability to cruise at high speed for a long range are presented. The benefits of the SES are applied to naval craft, together with a very quick look at the capabilities that will be available in the very near future. (Wassmann)
