Attenuation of pressure waves by sidewall mufflers with finite backing volume has been studied both analytically and experimentally. The mufflers are to suppress acoustic waves generated in a pulsed flowing gas laser system in which an initial SPL=180 dB and flow Mach number up to 0.5 are typical. Experiments were carried out in a shock tube in which independent control of a flow Mach number and reflected wave properties was achieved using a driven section end-plate with various thicknesses and porosities. Pressure waves with both step (shock wave) and triangular waveforms were considered. Two quasi-lD theories were developed: weak wave and general nonlinear. Agreement betweentheoretical and experimental results is good. (DePo)
