This report presents the results of a study to find a state-of-the-art solution to the cold starting problem of lifeboat diesel engines. The cold starting problem is phrased in a two-tier objective, namely; (1) being able to start the engine reliably at -22 F using starting aids and ship's power, and (2) starting the diesel engines reliably at ambient temperatures when ship's power is not available. This study was conducted in two parts: a state-of-the-art survey and a system design and laboratory testing program. (Stoehr)
