The Canadian Coast Guard are considering building and operating a large icbreaker in the Canadian Arctic powered by a Pressurized Light Water Reactor. This paper discusses the safety criteria which are being developed by the Atomic Energy Control Board (the nuclear regulatory authority in Canada) for such a ship. Safety criteria, which have been development for CANDU pressurized heavy water reactors over the last 15 years, are being adapted for PWR conditions. New criteria being developed specifically for a marine power plant are also discussed. (Se)
