Strength properies of presently available solders and some experimental alloys have been studied to identifa those materials most suitable for particular application to the copper and brass radiator. A wide range of lead-tin composition solders has been made with substantial effort expended with those solder alloys at the high lead end of the system because of the increasingly high costs of tin. Most work has been directed toward improving the tank-to-header joint. A tensile-peel specimen was utilized that has given definitive results with the solder alloys and found to be capable of correlation with radiators tested to destruction on laboratory equipment. Modified alloys in the lead-tin-silver system with improved strengths are demonstrated. Work with higher strength solders and some new experimental alloys reemphasized the importance of compositional effects on strength properties and test program variables on the comparative test results achieved. Creep fatigue interactions are shown. The minimum tin content solder alloy recommended for use as a tank-to-header solder was found to be 98 % lead 2 % tin. Danamic tests may modify the composition selected. (Wassmann)
