Blade spindle-moment values are presented for the operation of a five-bladed controllable-pitch propeller over a range of blade pitches and advance conditions. Spindle moment (blade turning effort) was measured on a single blade of NSRDC Model Propeller 4402 in an experimental program conducted in the 24-in. variable-pressure water tunnel. Experimental results are presented as mean spindle-moment values taken at steady-state operating conditions. No transient or time-dependent data were taken. The operating conditions investigated (1) positive pitch-steady ahead, (2) negative pitch-steady backing, and (3) negative pitch-ahead advance. The spindle moment due to hydrodynamic loading and that due to centrifugal forces were separated and nondimensionalized. The effects of Reynolds number and propeller blade cavitation are discussed briefly. (Kursetz)
