The recent success in joining 61-cm (24-in.) diameter X100 pipe with 3.2-cm (1.25-in.) wall thickness in less than three minutes by electron beam welding has demonstrated the considerable advantage of this method over normal processes. Seven hundred weld runs have been tested according to an acceptance procedure with a view to certifying the process for pipeline welding. Full-scale models of the major elements of the assembly and the lay ramp have been tested separately. By putting together these different components, it will be possible to open the way to deepsea pipelines. (Wassmann)
