The use of titanium tubing in power station condensers has achieved the objective of providing leak free units. Substantial savings have accrued both in terms of plant availability and avoidance of knock-on problems such as those due to chloride or copper contamination of the steam circuit (of particular consequence in PWR, BWR and AGR nuclear power plant). The paper reviews service experience to date world wide and in particular outlines the current and predicts potential future systems technology for optimum cost-effective use of titanium tubing. This both in the power sector and in on-shore and offshore oil, marine and desalination plant heat exchangers where sea or polluted inland water coolants are used. Choice of product type and importance of quality standards are considered as well as newer developments in the field of enhanced and extended surface tubing. (Wassmann)
