Most contemporary underwater instrumentation systems employ electromechanical cables with steel strength members, but recently developed high strength aramid fibers offer enticing characteristics for marine cable applications. These characteristics include very high strength-to-weight ratio, low stretch, flexibility and freedom from corrosion. Aramid material properties and cable configurations also present new challenges to cable hardware designers responsible for obtaining optimum performance from cable assemblies. This paper reviews material properties of aramid and steel used in electromechanical cables, identifies common underwater cable failure modes, and relates these failure modes to typical applications. The author presents guidelines for choosing between aramid and steel cables and reports comparative test data for representative cables and end fittings. (DePo)
