In recent years strict federal regulations have been established in areas of motor vehicle emissions and vehicle stopping distance requirements. With increased vehicle weight and potential engine vacuum reduction a braking system was needed to provide higher brake pressures for large passenger cars, light trucks, and off-highway vehicles. This system had to be economical, packageable in confined areas and had to function under extreme ambient and underhood temperatures. The requirements led Bendix to develop a hydraulic brake booster as one approach to provide a suitable braking system. This paper will describe the design and operation of the Hydro-Boost, a hydro-mechanical device consisting of a spool control valve, a mechanical ratio changing mechanism, a power piston, and a pneumatic accumulator reserve system.
