The current and future need to promote economy in operation in the marine, light truck, and passenger car fields, together with a sophisticated power plant requirement for the latter, points unerringly to the six cylinder diesel engine as being the basic unit most fitted to cover this family of applications. The most difficult and demanding of these sectors to cover in terms of overall user acceptability is without doubt, the passenger car field. It is this aspect with which this paper deals. This paper covers the design and development of a prototype Volvo six cylinder diesel engine. Consideration is given to the choice of engine configuration to give the proven output required in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged conditions and how these requirements react upon the design details. The main points of the test bed development phase are covered, finishing with the passenger vehicle testing and assessment. (Wassmann)
