The aircraft manufacturer's continual efforts to provide safe, reliable, and economical propulsion systems have required him to expand his understanding of power plants beyond traditional performance and weight aspects to engine durability, reliability, and maintainability. Only a thorough appreciation of all engine-related aspects enables him, in cooperation with the engine manufacturer and the airline customer, to furnish propulsion systems with improved life-cycle cost. Gaining insight to engine technology has been, and still is, an arduous and time-consuming task. The structural-mechanical design of aircraft gas turbine engines is only sparsely documented in the open literature and generally not readily accessible to the airframe manufacturer. This paper presents a guideline by which an airframe manufacturer can assess in a methodical and timely manner the potential structural-mechanical merits and concerns of new engine offerings. To this purpose, an overview is first given of the major structural-mechanical aspects of engine design as applicable to commercial aircraft propulsion. Engine development, performance, and maintenance experience are then briefly reviewed. (DePo)
