Axle and gearbox noise has persisted to a greater or lesser degree since the present concept of the motor vehicle was derived. The problem of the noise only exists if there is a subjective awareness of its presence and this is dependent upon the loudness and tonal qualities of frequencies of the noise. Axle or gearbox noise expressed as a subjective complaint covers a fairly broad field of frequencies and, unless it can be described in specific terms, an analytical assessment can prove very difficult when a correlation with a subjective rating is necessary. Difficulties arise when attempting to identify one frequency from a waveform which contains the fundamental and its first harmonic. It becomes increasingly so as the separation between frequencies reduces. It is for this reason that techniques and methods have been developed which can identify sources or likely reasons for noise and vibration. This analysis data can then be used to guide the manufacturing plant in improvements in quality by the control of manufacturing tolerances. (Wassmann)
