A continuously-variable gearbox gives the possibility of adapting the vehicle's propulsion system in an optimum way to the speed and power requirements under all operating conditions. This article reports on tests with a hydrostatic gearbox permitting such an operational mode. It is basically possible to operate the engine at its optimum working point under the actual conditions. A simplified control system already shows to what extent consumption figures can be improved. Comparative tests with mechanical and hydrodynamic gearboxes proved the superiority of such a gearbox concerning the following items: 1. Continuous and better acceleration on the whole, 2. Higher final speed with gradeability unchanged, 3. Improved utilization of the engine's performance range. 4. Optimum adaptability of the engine brake power to the actual downgrade. If in the following states of development, efficiency can be enhanced and noise reduced, this gearbox will offer interesting solutions for various applications. (Wassmann)
