Examples of fretting are described as they occur in the engines, transmission, and structures of aircraft, railway rolling stock, automobiles and ships. Methods of alleviating the problem range from improved design to surface treatments such as metal spraying and shot peening. The problem of fretting arising from vibration when transporting materials and components is also dealt with, together with the means of overcoming it. (Kursetz)
