In their quest to improve performance, air breathing engine technologists have aggressively and effectively consumed the results of research in a number of disciplines. Over the past three decades, their efforts have steadily increased the thrust-to-weight ratio and decreased the specific fuel consumption of gas turbine engines. Other technological trends, prompted by earlier successful research efforts, combine with identifiable shortcomings to influence the direction of future research plans. The paper examines several areas in which research may lead to improvements in air breathing engine technology. (Kursetz)
