Materials presently specified for key components of tank cars are reviewed. Arctic service conditions are compared with those normally experienced in southern Canada. Material selection is seen to be improved by the application of fracture mechanics concepts. Test methods, inspection and any factors affecting service safety are indicated, with a proposal for the methodology of future designs. (Kursetz)
