Living systems provide an enormous array of working examples of design concepts related to many engineering disciplines. One such example of mechanical design in nature is the oscillating wing mechanism of flies that employs a double space-toggle having flexible supports. This example is presented in a case study format. This type format is recommended as an effective means for introducing those results of biological research that may be of interest and use to designers and engineering educators. (Kursetz)
