This report covers the investigation by the Chemical Subgroup of the Fire-Resistant Hydraulic Fluid Task Force. The Task Force was organized in 1975-76 to address the problems arising from the introduction of the new 'less-flammable' MIL-H-46170, 'Hydraulic Fluid, Rust-Inhibited, Synthetic Hydrocarbon Base, Fire-Resistant.' The problems were associated with stuck/inoperative servovalues in the gun control system of the M60A1 (AOS) tanks. The problems were subsequently identified with one cornpany's product which contained a trace amount of a water-coupling inhib itor, polypropylene glycol. The inhibitor in the pressence of absorbed moisture caused coprecipitation of the rust inhibitor which deposited on the critical surfaces of spool valve systems. (Peters)
