Apart from medium-speed diesel engines, high-speed diesel engines too have established themselves in traction applications. A comparison of specific diesel engine characteristics of international makes does not allow to evaluate the parameters reliability and life positively or negatively by classifying them into speed groups. Compact diesel engines built on the basis of modern technology offer high reliability and long life with a minimum of maintenance. They feature large standardization, favorable installation conditions, and quick interchangeability. In the field of high performance units with maximum outputs of 5,580 hp from a single unit, a large reduction in the size of the motive power unit has been gained through a direct air cooling system for lube oil, engine cooling water, and charge air. Thus, it is possible to realize traction units up to 11,000 hp with dimensions and weights helping the railway companies to satisfy requirements today and in the future. (Kursetz)
