This paper deals with the many considerations, tests, and evaluations that must be made to integrate a well-proven marine diesel engine to a locomotive application. All aspects of maintenance and operations in severe conditions encountering tunnels, high ambient temperatures, and high and low altitudes are dealt with. Performance, reliability, and fuel economy as well as exhaust emissions are given top priority in this American locomotive application. Special attention has been given to exhaust temperatures, air handling, and temperature control of fluid systems in an attempt to increase reliability and extend component life. (Kursetz)
