The paper covers development and operating experience of the Olympus TM3B, Tyne RM1A and RM1C engines in the Royal Navy over the period 1976 to 1978. Problem areas that have been identified and their solutions are discussed and lines of related research and development in the fields of Combustion, Materials, and Engine Health Monitoring are indicated. The paper concludes that the decision of 10 years ago adopt all gas turbine machinery for future suface warships is being thoroughly vindicated by experience. (Kursetz)
