The DD963 Spruance Class Destroyers were the first Naval vessels to be outfitted with auxiliary type heat recovery boilers. After a combined total operating time of approximately 30000 hr, various conclusions relative to future design considerations can be observed. The objective of this paper is threefold: a) to identify existing problem areas that need further improvement, b) to develop new design criteria for future heat recovery boilers, and c) to consolidate the above findings into an optimum design.
