Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have reached a state of maturity in cost, performance and reliability, to be seriously considered as an Automotive Component. The light output has increased 200 to 400 % in the past 4 years and is expected to increase an equal amount in the next 4 years. The red and orange LEDs are fast approaching the efficiency of a red or orange filtered incandescent lamp. Reliability of the LED devices under the extreme conditions of the automotive environments has been shown to be excellent. (Kursetz)
