The practical application of ion-drag air jets as a means of enhancing convective heat transfer was investigated. It was found that the devices could be miniaturized sufficiently to allow integration into densely packed electronics enclosures. Single and multiple jet arrays were fabricated and tested. Volumetric flow rates were correlated to devise dimensions and electrical characteristics. Localized heat transfer augmentation and the enhancement of convective heat transfer in enclosed cells were investigated. It was found that overall heat transfer coefficients could be significantly increased by the application of ion-drag air jets. (Wassmann)
