Avionics reliability and crew performance are directly dependent on the Environmental Control System (ECS). The current and past ECS on Naval aircraft have not always provided satisfactory environment for the avionics and the crew. This paper discusses the author's views on the future requirements and present problems of ECS on Naval aircraft. Both ECS equipment and the ECS interface with crew compartments, avionics, and aircraft power systems are treated. The impact of the ECS on the total aircraft, especially on life cycle costs and take-off gross weight is emphasized. (Wassmann)
