Since the oil criysis in 1973, fuel and labour costs have continued to soar, while the world economy has remained dull. In these conditions, the shipowners' desire for an energy and labour saving propulsion plant has been very evident. In response to such a demand, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., has tried to develop a new type propulsion plant, and late in 1976 completed the Kawasaki Super Economical Propulsion Plant (KSE Plant) which can save energy and labour compared with a conventional plant. This report describes features of this KSE Plant. Also described is an outline of the first ship equipped with this KSE plant, which was completed last January and has been continuing successful operation.(Wassmann)
