This paper presents an experimental investigation on the deterioration through time of the auxiliary machines for the main diesel engine; in particular, the performance changes of the Turbo-charger, Air Cooler, Lub.Oil Cooler and deterioration of the air cupply/gas exhaust system. The investigations of the deterioration of the diesel engine that have been done were almost all concerned with the main components of the diesel engine such as the piston ring, cylinder liner, etc., and there seems to have been almost no analysis of the performance changes mentioned above using actual data collected on board the ships. All of these investigations are, on the other hand, indispensable in materializing our dream to build unmanned ships and to operate them efficiently and as long as possible without maintenance. This time, NKK developed a data collector, which is equipped for on board ship and a lot of reliable data has been collected. Using those data, various kinds of performance changes were analyzed. This paper also shows an economical evaluation of those performance changes and a method of finding out the optimum maintenance interval.(Wassmann)
