As used in this paper, integral stiffening refers to the occuring of conventional stiffener shapes such as J's, Z's, hats, channels, etc., with the facing plies. While the matrix system is not a limiting factor, the epoxy/graphite and fiberglass materials are discussed. Advantages of this type construction over honeycomb structure is reported on along with a recently completed program which changed certain C-5A fairings from honeycomb to integrally stiffened laminate construction.
